“Jemma? Fitz? Coulson? Ward? May? Where’d you guys go?”
The fog started getting thicker and closing in around Skye’s surroundings and the faces she was talking to just a few moments ago were disappearing along with any and all landmarks. They were all here, around her enjoying the beautiful day, Jemma had been holding her hand and the rest of the team were smiling and telling stories and then things changed so quickly and Skye couldn’t react fast enough. Now here she was, all alone with the darkening sky and the impenetrable fog sweeping in around her, she had been sitting comfortable when all the happiness of the day disappeared now she was standing rigidly, leaning forward trying to see in front of her.
She could have sworn that the trees around her were full of bright and healthy leaves but now, perhaps because of the fog, they were barren and dead looking almost as if it were in the middle of winter. And all of the loudly singing birds that were previously occupying the trees were gone also, in fact, everything seemed to have been swallowed up by the fog. All beauty, all noise and more importantly all of the people that were important to her were gone with them.
The fear was gripping her but she moved forward anyway, taking little hesitant steps in front of her. She had to find everybody, what if they were just as lost as she was? What if they were hurt? She imagined poor Jemma curled up in the desolate fog, terrified and alone. This gave her a little bit more confidence in her steps and now she was beginning to make some progress, at least she thought she was, she couldn’t really be sure. She never raised her legs very far up and kept them just above the black ground just in case any of them were laying down.
She saw the fog swirl and move in front of her and she could just make out a dark shape, it was two small to be Ward or Coulson and Simmons and Fitz were both wearing they’re white lab coats the last time she had seen them so it must have been May.
“MAY! May, I’m over here!”
The dark figure started to move away and Skye started panicking and yelling even louder for the older agent
“Melinda! Please! It’s me, Skye!”
There was still no response and Skye bolted forward in an attempt to catch up with May but as she approached where she should have been, the dark figure disappeared, making her wonder if it was even May at all. She searched around desperately, making sure that someone else was not there. Her breathe was coming in short, labored gasps now and she was feeling light headed. The fog seemed to be getting even more potent, Skye began to become aware of just how claustrophobic she was feeling and the panic of being alone with no explanation was starting to effect her judgment. She began running forward at dangerous speeds, screaming frantically for the rest of the team, all inklings of logic were gone and she could feel herself falling into a hysteria.
Through the layers and layers of wet, blinding fog she fought through, screaming at the top of her lungs until, without warning, the ground came up and she went down with a severe jolt. She coughed as mud splattered into her face and made it even harder to breathe. She wiped the mud from her mouth the best she could and then took a deep breath, trying to pull herself back together. She pushed herself up on to her elbows only to stop as she saw what was directly in front of her; A hand, a small, pale, delicate looking hand was lying limply on the ground in front of her, she recognized the little charm bracelet as Jemma’s and she immediately lurched forward to grab the hand.
She breathed a sigh of relief when she felt the touch of her girlfriend but it was short lived since Jem’s hand was horribly cold. Skye squeezed her hand and began to drag herself on her stomach to where Jemma lay, a searing pain was ripping down her leg and she realized that she must have broken something in the fall but that was the least of her worries as she pulled herself through the mud and fog, still holding Jemma’s limp hand.
“Jemma! Baby, I’m here, don’t worry! I’ve got you, sweetie, please wake up! I’m coming. Jemma? Jem, answer me, please?!”
She got to where she was laying and put her hands on the scientist’s face but she went silent a moment later. Jemma was laying on her back, her eyes were wide open in an expression of fear and shock, but they were empty and dark, there was no more twinkle in the beautiful eyes. Her face was colorless and as cold as her hand was, Skye began tapping her cheeks, not believing what she was seeing. The tapping turned into full fledged shaking as she tried, desperately to wake the love of her life up but no matter how loudly she screamed or how hard she shook her, Jemma’s body would just fall heavily back to the muddy ground. Her screams turned into violent sobs over her body as she grasped onto her girlfriend’s lifeless body.
“Jemma wake up! You’re not dead, please wake up! Don’t leave me! I need you Jemma, stop it! Don’t leave me… I need you… jem?”
Her voice trailed off as her sobs increased as she lay, weakly over Jemma’s body. She screamed as a large hand grasped her arm painfully and started to pull her, violently away from Jemma. She fought as hard as she could to get back to her girlfriend but the harder she fought, the more painful the hand on her arm became and she screamed for him to let her go. He pulled her harshly to face him and she gasped when she saw that it was Ward. There was no reason for him to be hurting her like this, but his grasp was dead tight. His face was as dead looking as Jemma’s was, except he was alive despite the way he looked at her menacingly with dead black eyes. She panicked and struggled to get away from with a mixture of screams and sobs coming from her mouth. She just knew that he was going to kill her but she didn’t know why. Then his mouth moved for the first time.
“Skye.”
That wasn’t his voice. That’s not his voice. Was all she thought as she thrashed and kicked trying to get him away.
“Skye!”
“Skye!
Skye opened her eyes and screamed again but when she looked around it was just the bus, the fog was gone and Ward was gone. Instead she looked up and saw Jemma’s worried face looking down at her. They seemed to be on the floor.
“Sweetie, you’re okay, you fell off the bed, it was just a dream, you’re safe.”
Her voice was sweet and delicate as she smiled and lightly wiped the tears and sweat off of Skye’s face, rocking her slightly.
“She’s got a fever, get me some cold water, Fitz.”
Just like that her sweet loving voice was gone as she barked the orders like a general. Skye pulled her self closer to Jemma, breathing was still hard and she was shaking almost uncontrollably, making her weak and disoriented, but Jemma helped her by pulling her close and gently stroking her hair.
“It was cold. And there was fog everywhere… You were dead, I found you dead, you left me, why did you leave!”
Skye had begun to sob again, still in shock over what she had been through and not really sure what she was saying but Jemma just held on tighter, shushing her lightly and keeping her lips on Skye’s forehead.
“I’m here now, baby, I’m not going to leave. I promise. I promise.
Skye was just beginning to calm down when the sudden presence of a suit next to them made her jump violently. Coulson put a hand up apologetically and Skye could see from his face that he was extremely worried. She leaned back onto Jemma’s chest and let the scientist hold her gently. She could hear them talking around her and she could see the rest of the team standing in the room looking down in worry on her but she was too tired to care about them. She coughed as fluid went down her throat and shivered as the bus air hit her. She could just feel Coulson draping a blanket over her shoulders and the world began to get fuzzy again.
“What’s wrong with her, jem?
Skye could feel the vibrations in Jemma’s chest as she talked.
“I believe she’s very ill, sir. Her temperature is extremely high and she seems to be having some problems breathing. It was probably the cold environment that we just got away from, either way she’s had quite a scare from a dream but that’s not uncommon. I’m going to give her some Antibiotics and keep a close eye on her, sir.
Jemma kept talking but eventually her voice faded away and Skye was lulled to sleep knowing that she was safe in her girlfriend’s arms.
