Skye leaned over the little sink in the bus, staring intently at the mirror in front of her with unfocused and red eyes. All she could think about was Jemma, HER Jemma, trapped in The Hub while she was safe back on The Bus. She ran a hand through her messy hair and when her fingers got tangled she harshly ripped them out, barely noticing the pain now creeping through her scalp. She slammed her hand down on the edge adding another ignored element of pain to her aching head and scalp. Her mind was racing between panic and worry over Jemma’s safety and multiple plans of rescue that although were passionate and daring, were also ill-prepared and foolhardy. But whatever, she thought, anything that would land Jemma Simmons, the best thing that had ever happened to her, back in her arms was going to have to do, no matter the consequences.
With that thought, Skye pushed herself away and immediately went into the main computer room. Within a matter of fifteen minutes, she was standing in front of a huge collections of blueprints, personnel files, and security diagrams, in the corner of the wall, out of the way but still in sight was an I.D photo of Simmons. Her plans were detailed, at least she could say that, she efficiently cross-referenced all of the given elements and after a few roadblocks that left several items smashed on the floor she finally had a clear idea of what she was doing. By the end of the hour she had drawn up a rather complicated but daring plan and she finally nodded to herself and convinced herself weakly that this was going to turn out okay.
The pressure, however, that she was going to have to do this alone since she hadn’t seen anyone in a while was beginning to leave doubts in her abilities. That wasn’t going to stop her from doing though, alone or not, so she headed for the utilities closet and suited up. She packed a variety of hidden little tools and weapons within her black S.H.I.E.L.D uniform and after placing her hair up so that it wouldn’t get in the way, she opened the door back to the computer room gun in hand completely prepared to kick some major ass (Even if she wasn’t feeling that confident). However, as the door opened, she was surprised to see May standing on the other side, like her, she was in full uniform and was arming her weapon. Skye blatantly tried to hide her gun from the older agent who didn’t even seem to acknowledge her presence. Skye took a deep breathe.
“I’m going after her, May.”
The agent never looked up and instead continued to check all of her personal equipment.
“I Know. We’re going with you.”
“But--”
“This your plan?”
Melinda walked over to the board and looked over the layers of documents with little lines running between them.
“Um.. Yeah?”
“Hmm. Educated. However, Impractical.”
Still not looking at Skye, May took the little remote and began to quickly move pages around. She would glance, move and then erase the many forms of information, her eyes moving too fast for Skye to keep up with what she was looking at. Eventually all that was left on the wall was a single blueprint and the I.D photo of Jemma in the corner. May took out a red laser pointer and used it to specify her words.
“We enter here. Extract here. And we exit here. Got it?”
Of course Skye ‘got it’ it was an extremely simple and straightforward layout however May’s timing was confusing her more than anything.
“What about the equipment we’ll need?”
“It’s ready to go out front.”
“ May, I’ve been in here for, like, and hour and a half. Why didn’t you tell me what we were doing?”
“Well, I had to let you do something to keep you busy.”
Skye looked at May with a raised eyebrow debating on whether she should be feeling angry and confused or just confused. May looked at her sideways and then turned to face her with her arms crossed and she got the strained expression that she always has whenever she is trying to be sentimental or soft.
“Look, I know what it’s like to have someone you love stuck in a dangerous situation. Sometimes fear can blind you and I let you stay here because it was better for both you and the rest of the team. It’s not that you would not have been helpful it’s just why put you through the added pressure when it wasn’t necessary.”
May’s face had softened and she looked more like a concerned mother than a cold, calculated agent. Skye nodded and quietly thanked the older agent, through all of the chaos that was raging through her mind at the moment she still took a moment to appreciate the fact that May had everything under control (Including her) from the very beginning.
“You ready to go.”
“Let’s do this.”
Meanwhile, back at The Hub….
Simmons stole herself away from everything happening for a moment, and in her situation that meant staring a wall for a little while. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and let it out only after a few moments. Yes, everything was messed up and yes she was in a lot of trouble but despite the situation she couldn’t tell whether she was more worried about herself or Skye. She knew Skye could take care of herself but what she didn’t want was for her to rush in guns blazing and get herself hurt in an attempt to rescue her girlfriend. However, for just a second, the thought made the scientist smile halfway touched that she knew that Skye would run through Hell to keep her safe and halfway because of the image of Skye that popped in her head as the daring adventurer hero like you see on the cover of romance novels. Jemma reached up and held onto the simple little heart necklace that Skye had given her before all of this had started, she rubbed it between her thumb and forefinger silently hoping that Skye wasn’t going get herself hurt… or worse.. Killed.
Thankfully, May’s plan went off without a hitch and by nighttime Jemma and everyone was safely back on The Bus. Skye who was a little bit behind everyone finally showed up and stood at the door. Jemma turned around and went straight to her, wrapping her arms around the agent and gently kissing her on the lips.
“Awwww!”
Came the simultaneous and slightly mocking response from the rest of the team before they all wandered off to their own areas, leaving the women alone in the doorway. Jemma leaned back a little ways to look Skye in the eye.
“You’re my hero. You know that?”
“Weeell, I wouldn’t say ‘hero’ exactly.”
Skye chuckled
“It was actually May’s plan and expertise that got you out of there.”
“That’s not what I mean, Skye”
Jemma looked down, although still holding on to Skye with both arms, they had moved from the doorway and were now almost dancing in the middle of the floor. It took Simmons a few moments to continue, relationships weren't science not including the biological aspects and they were something that she still struggled to understand. She wanted to get her point across and she wanted it to come out correctly. Skye, knowing the person she was dating, patiently stayed silent as Jemma calculated.
“Wh-What I mean is that while I was at The Hub, I never had any doubt that you would come and save me. Even if the rest of the team hadn’t been there, you would have stormed it alone and I never doubted it for a second. So much so that, in all reality, I wasn’t really that afraid.”
The two were now swaying back and forth to non-existent music looking quite fondly at each other.
“Well, you would do the same for me.”
Jemma smiled and pulled out the tie in Skye’s hair.
“I would.”
Skye twirled Jemma around to flourish that wasn’t there and then kissed her again before Jemma smiled and broke it off. She grabbed Skye’s hand and pulled her through the door and into a nearby closet. Skye grinned and then pulled the door shut.
