Not as Bad as I Thought

Mmkay, I actually wasn't going to post this because I really didn't think that it was very good but I ended up getting 30 notes in one night and two new followers the next day so I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. This is my second prompt from one of my favorite followers. Enjoy.

This shouldn’t be this hard! May thought angrily as she leaned back frustrated in the camera room watching the left screen where the rest of the team were crowding around the table, grabbing the obviously planted candy from it’s red box. The guys weren’t supposed to be back this soon and once again ruined her little plan to get the girls to finally admit that they were in love with each other. It was going really good too and May smirked as they both went to the chocolates on the table, they were talking and smiling like usual but as they nibbled on the sweets they moved closer together. They were shoulder and shoulder with shy smiles and May thought that all her work was finally coming together when the women looked up and back apart as Fitz walked through them to the table, closely followed by Ward and Coulson. Skye and Jemma continued to smile at each other from across the gap that the men had put in between them and May fumed, this had been the closest that she had come to getting them together.
Normally matchmaking wasn’t May’s style or even something that she concerned herself over but at this point in her life something she WAS concerned with was the happiness of her younger teammates. Something inside of her warmed when she saw Skye protecting Jemma or when Jemma worried over Skye’s health and she knew that they were exactly what they both needed. So she started trying to speed the process along and it became more like a hobby that she did whenever they weren’t busy but she would have never guessed that it would be this hard. They were already close friends, they already spent a lot of time together and it was obvious how they glowed in each other’s presence; Why didn’t they just kiss already! Granted, May did love a challenge, even if it was annoying as hell but it seemed like every time May would give them a little push something or someone would ruin her whole plan. It didn’t even bother her that much at first but after so many unsuccessful attempts she was getting seriously impatient for them to get together. She had worked to hard for them to just be friends.
May’s first attempt at playing matchmaker to Skye and Jemma was a classic and she hadn’t really put much thought into it since she really didn’t think that it would take that much before they would be making out. She had been sitting in the lab with the women as they chatted pleasantly when Jemma went into the storage closet to get something for the project that she was working on. May saw Skye steal a glance at the scientist’s ass as she walked away and then she remembered how she had wanted to get them together. It wasn’t long before the opportunity presented itself and Jemma called from inside the little room for some help and Skye immediately hopped up joined her in the perfectly sized room. Without thinking or hesitation May got up from her seat walked to the control panel, punched a few buttons and then walked away before anyone even noticed her. The door slid shut and locked automatically due to Melinda’s commands, trapping the women inside quite efficiently. May quietly left and stood like a statue just outside the door and listened as they thumped loudly from the other side and called half heartedly for someone to open the door for them. She would have felt a little guilty if they hadn’t stopped after a while and the room went quiet. She smiled privately at how incredibly easy this agenda was until she heard another door open and the sound of Fitz’s Scottish accent calling for Simmons. May whipped around to see the engineer looking around hopelessly for his partner, of course when they heard Fitz in the room, the thumping began again and Leo ran to the closet. The agent and the scientist practically spilled out, laughing with red faces. Fitz stood back and looked at them with a confused eyebrow raised, Jemma giggled.
“The door malfunctioned while we were in there,”
“Wasn’t Agent May in here?”
Skye jumped in on the conversation
“Yeah, but I think she left after I went in there to help Jem, she’s probably up front driving.”
May stood on the other side of the door with an annoyed scowl on her face.
The second time, May just put them on a mission together despite Ward’s complaints, she just crossed her arms and looked over at him, he gave in pretty quickly. They were doing surveillance from the van while the rest of the team went to their own perspective positions. Nothing was really expected to happen that day, the guy wasn’t expected to show his face anytime soon making for a very boring mission. May kept a little private feed from a camera in the back of the van just in case it worked and occasionally throughout the mission she would look at the feed from her phone and check in on the girls. Every time she looked in they would either be laughing about something or having some sort of serious conversation, there didn’t seem to be anything in between. May checked in one last time, completely confident that they would finally get together on this mission when she looked at the video and Skye was laughing about something and leaning on Jemma’s shoulder. That is until Ward’s voice came over the comms.
“Suspect is moving. Move in.”
May rolled her eyes as the van that the women were in drove forward with the rest of the team, normally she would have let somebody else have the satisfaction of apprehending the scumbag that they were after but she was irritated so ditching all of S.H.E.I.L.D’s technology she grabbed a rock and launched it at the guy’s head, he fell instantly unconscious and May detected a glimmer of fear in Coulson’s eyes as he looked over at her.
The rest of the times weren’t really that specific and it just became a jumble of little attempts on May’s part to trick the girls into admitting they loved each other in some way or another. If it wasn’t something like the chocolates, it was something similar like messing up the schedule a little bit so that they ended up together or like the Time May put a tarantula in Skye’s bed so she ran to Jemma’s bed and yet still nothing had happened between them. And May was sure of that, with her spending so much time in the camera room and her just being perceptive she would have known if there was a relationship going on within her own team. Coulson realized what was going on pretty quickly, especially after the whole spider thing and he even talked to her about completely in awe over how weird this was for the agent.
“Why do you want them to be together so bad?”
May rolled her eyes.
“ Because they obviously want to be together and I’m sick of all the unresolved sexual tension going on. It’s distracting.”
Coulson studied Melinda for a few minutes, his arms were crossed and he looked like he was trying to figure out a difficult riddle.
“Yeah, but it’s probably going to happen eventually, you know, in a few years or so. So why push it so hard?”
May knew that he wasn’t going away until he had a truthful answer.
“It’s because it’s very difficult to find someone to care about and hold onto in this business and I just don’t want the girls making the same mistakes that I did when I was their age.”
Coulson nodded solemnly.
“Fair enough.”
Finally, Melinda just went for it one day when her and Skye were standing in the lab area quietly. Jemma walked in, a sweet smile on her goggled covered face, and a handful of flasks. Without thinking, May began to walk towards the door, she lightly stuck her foot out as the scientist passed. Jemma gasped and began to fell forward, just as May assumed however, Skye caught her halfway, a few of the flasks fell to the ground and Jemma’s glasses landed lopsided on her face.
“Oops.”
May said dryly in a hushed tone before she slid out just outside the door, observing the interaction. Skye smiled, still holding the scientist close and halfway to the ground.
“You Okay?”
Jemma looked up into Skye’s eyes and her face went immediately red, not moving from the agent’s arms.
“Y-yeah”
She said hesitantly
“Sorry”
Skye laughed.
“What are you apologizing for? You fell, silly.”
That’s when May saw it coming and she grinned from the other side of the door.
“No, I- I’m sorry for this.”
The scientist leaned up and kissed Skye, letting go of the rest of the equipment in her arms and putting them around the agent’s waist. Skye didn’t even hesitate to kiss back, slowly pushing Jem over to the nearest wall with one hand on her face. She pulled back for a second, never completely leaving the scientist’s lips.
“Do not apologize for that, Jem.”
Melinda looked away and leaned on the wall with a pleased grin on her face, her work here was done. Well, almost anyway. Like clockwork she heard the footsteps coming through the corridor as Ward and Fitz made there way to the lab. Without missing a beat she pulled the long tin sword out of it’s handle and put it across the entrance, the men stopped and looked at her confused.
“Just go back.”
Fitz moved a hand to protest.
“But-”
“Keep moving.”
They backed away and made their way down the corridor, glancing nervously at the agent behind them. May smirked and then put the sword back in it’s sheath, brimming with satisfaction she quietly left.
