Skimmons First Date

Skye and Jemma walked a few feet apart from each other on the dark, cold road in the middle of nowhere. An hour before they had been headed out for their very first date, Skye had a particular place in mind that she had found and wanted to take Jemma. Coulson had smiled and told the girls not to worry about work for the night and so their communicators were back on the bus, all they had were their phones which had absolutely no service. One broken GPS and a busted transmission later and here they were, stranded in the middle of a night in the middle of nowhere.
Skye had her head hung as they walked unenthusiastically on the edge of the road, lazily dodging the puddles in the path, Jemma kept looking over reassuringly. However, her efforts were lost on the highly disappointed woman.
“It’s not your fault, Skye.”
Skye nodded, still not looking at the scientist. They walked in silence for a while before Jemma just stopped in the road, her hands in little fists at her side. Skye stopped and looked up for the first time, curiously.
“What’s wrong?”
The scientist crossed her arms and stood stubbornly
“No, I’m not going to do this.”
“Do what?”
“Waste this perfectly fine night! Yes we’re lost. Yes it’s dark and cut off. But--”
She broke off thinking over her words carefully
“But I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time and I’m not letting it slip away from me. This date is something I’ve been dreaming of since I met you and I refuse to let some stupid broken machines ruin it.”
She balled up her hands and put them back at her side, still in speech stance.
“So, either just leave me here and come get me In the morning or get over here and hold my hand.”
She seemed surprised that those words came out of her mouth but she stood her ground anyway. Skye, who had been listening in awe to the scientist, smiled and made a salute.
“Yes, Ma’am”
She walked over to Jemma and took one of her now loose fists in her hand and squeezed it reassuringly. Jemma nodded confidently.
“That’s better.”
The scene was much sweeter as they walked in the dark with only a half moon lighting road, holding hands and talking idly. Skye’s bad attitude was lost as Jemma started skipping, pulling her hand and giggling like she had never seen before. It wasn’t until Skye’s face dropped and she stopped with wide eyes that the scientist ceased her skipping.
“Skye, what is it?”
The agent motioned silently at the ground in front of them where a long snake was resting on the gravel. Jemma laughed at the terrified face of her girlfriend in the presence of a reptile 8 feet away. The scientist pulled Skye’s hand sideways, leading them around the snake. Despite the fact that they were being extra quiet walking around it, the animal still twitched violently at the sound of their shoes on the gravel. Skye screamed and started running forward up the road with Jemma screaming in tow behind her. They were at least a hundred feet away before Skye stopped, they were both breathing heavily and leaning on their knees. Jemma was giggling and Skye was looking at her in awe.
“I didn’t think you were afraid of snakes.”
Skye said breathlessly, the scientist laughed putting a hand on the agent’s shoulder.
“I’m not”
“Then why were you screaming?”
Their voices were becoming increasingly louder and Jemma’s laugh increased in volume
“Because you were screaming!”
Skye pulled an arm around the scientist, still giggling.
“I’m keeping you close just in case we run into anymore of those things.”
“Snakes?”
“Yeah whatever?”
Skye winked at the grinning scientist and they continued walking, arms hanging playfully around each other’s shoulders.
“You know what, Jem?”
“What?”
Skye laid her head on Jemma’s shoulder lovingly.
“I’ve been dreaming of this date since I met you too.”
The scientist smiled and paused, debating on how to respond, however their moment was interrupted by the bright lights coming towards them, suddenly over the hill behind them. They covered their eyes and Skye let go of Jemma’s hand excitedly.
“Maybe we can hitch a ride!”
The vehicle coming at them looked like some kind of farm truck and despite the agent waving her arms near the middle of the road, the truck didn’t alter it’s break neck speed. Skye continued trying to get the driver’s attention but as it came closer she was forced to move away. It passed them, slamming violently into a puddle and creating a wave of muddy water to hit the women as it passed. Skye held out her soaked arms and Jemma left her mouth open in shock, they didn’t move as the truck drove out of sight. Skye slowly turned around to face the soaked scientist, she lightly shook her arms expelling some of the mixture from her blouse. And in a voice of defeat, said with a frank smile.
“Well, we didn’t get hit by the truck so I’m counting this as a victory for tonight.”
Jemma’s expression hadn’t moved but as the two muddy women looked at each other their mouths slowly began to crack into smiles. And a few moments later they both lost it completely in laughter until they were practically on their knees with the giggles. The ridiculous truth of the situation had finally hit them and it was either laugh or cry.  A while later Skye gave one final huff and wiped the tears of laughter from her eyes as she stood crookedly up and stumbled forward.
“Where are you going?”
Skye laughed and spun around, looking down at the red faced scientist.
“Imma go over this hill and cry ‘cause that is literally all that’s left to do now.”
She walked away and Jemma stumbled up and followed her jovially as she attempted to pull some mud out of her tangled hair. The scientist ran over and put her arms around the agent’s waste, giggling.
“Don’t cry. This night may be absolutely insane but I’m happy that we’re together.”
She turned the agent around, looking brightly into Skye’s mud covered face.
“It makes everything a thousand times better and there’s no one I’d rather get stranded in the middle of nowhere to deal with snakes and rude truck drivers with more than you. I know that sounds silly, but--”
Skye smiled and let her forehead fall on Jemma’s forehead.
“It’s not silly. I would have been seriously disappointed with this as a first date with anybody but you. Somehow you make even the terrible situations better.”
Jemma leaned forward slightly as if she were about to kiss the eager agent before her eyes strayed and she moved her head away, looking behind Skye with wide eyes.
“Oh, Skye look!”
She turned around and took a steady breath as she saw the sun beginning to peek over the horizon with brilliant colors. From where they were they had almost a perfect view of the sunrise in front of them. It was almost as if the sun was coming up just for them. Jemma took a hold of Skye’s arm and they sat down, calmly, staring up at the gorgeous sight before their eyes. As the sun got higher and higher, Jemma ended up in front of Skye, leaning backwards on the agent’s chest with her arms around the scientist’s waste. Both of them speechless for the longest time and when they finally did speak, their voices were soft like whispers.
“I guess this night wasn’t a total disaster.”
“I’d say not. An isolated adventure that ends in a gorgeous sunrise? This is certainly one of the best first dates I’ve ever been on. Thanks to you.”
Skye kissed Jemma’s head
“No, thanks to you”
Jemma giggled lightly.
“It was certainly worth the wait. Can we make a second date?”
Skye raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah definitely, but next time we’re staying in.”
“Yeah.”
Jemma swatted a mosquito off her arm
“Definitely.”
